Both creative academics, musicians and writers, David Lee and Gary Barwin have been working together for quite a while as an incendiary duo.  Both as accomplished instrumentalists and artists, have endured and grown through various artistic challenges, while creating original pieces. With Gary’s talented son Ryan Barwin, who often plays in country and rock bands, added to the mix on the uniquely lush pedal steel guitar, our avant-country fantasies will finally be realized.

Gary Barwin is a poet, fiction writer, composer, multi-media and visual artist and performer.  His music and writing have been published, performed and broadcast in Canada, the US and elsewhere. He is 2014-15 Writer in Residence at Western University (London, Ontario) and was Young Voices Writer in Residence at Toronto Public Library in Fall 2013.  Barwin currently lives in Hamilton, Ontario with his family where he is being worked over by Yiddish for Pirates, the great Canadian Jewish pirate novel.

David Lee is a writer, academic and double bassist. Originally from BC, he spent years in the Toronto art scene and on BC’s Sunshine Coast, and currently lives in Hamilton, Ontario. Wolsak & Wynn recently published a newly revised edition of David’s critically-acclaimed jazz book The Battle of the Five Spot: Ornette Coleman and the New York Jazz Field.  This fall David brought the Cthulhu mythos to the mean streets of modern-day Hamilton with his young adult novel, The Midnight Games. In 2012 Tightrope Books of Toronto published David’s first novel, Commander Zero.

Holger Schoorl — guitar

Tomasz Krakowiak — percussion

Purveyors of quiet, minimalist music, at turns introspective, bold, fascinating and intense, this duo generates a highly moving improvised set that will surely knock you out.

Holger Schoorl is a composer, improviser and guitarist based in Toronto.  His primary collaborators are Tomasz Krakowiak (improvising duo), Germaine Liu and Mark Zurawinski (improvised and composed music), Scott Thomson, Kyle Brenders and Pete Johnston (as band “Ancient Egypt” now on hiatus), the guitarists Ken Aldcroft, Rob MacDonald and Mike Savona (improvised and composed music) and more recently with Phil McKee (video and performance collaborations) and Jill Connell (music for theatre).

Percussionist Tomasz Krakowiak‘s sound ranges from post-minimal explorations of barely audible phenomena to drone, overtone density. His music is characterized by intense and detailed sonic events. Apart from playing duets with Holger Schoorl, Branko Dzinovic, Michelangelo Iaffaldano, Krakowiak has performed and recorded with John Butcher, Kaffe Matthews, Gert Jan -Prins, CCMC and others.

An exciting early Sunday evening double-bill… be there!
